Zusammenfassung
Die erste Beobachtung ist, dass in der Literatur zur Theorie multinationaler Unternehmen bzw. zu den Direktinvestitionen im Ausland die Besonderheiten von Hochtechnologieunternehmen — von Unternehmen, die in einer „emergierenden“ Industrie agieren — nicht ausreichend belichtet werden. Die Forschung konzentriert sich sehr weitgehend auf „reife“ Industrien, auf Industrien, in denen sich die Branchengrenzen und erfolgversprechenden „Geschäftsrezepte“ schon herauskristallisiert haben. Als Beleg hierfür mag ein repräsentativer „Reader“ dienen, den Buckley und Ghauri (1993) herausgegeben haben; die hier aufgenommenen Studien beschäftigen sich durchweg mit etablierten Branchen und/oder Unternehmen (vgl. Abb. 1).1 Eine Begründung für diesen Bias mag in den theoretischen Wurzeln zu finden sein, die die Internationalisierungsliteratur geprägt haben — in dem orthodox-industrieökonomischen Paradigma, auf dem die bahnbrechende Arbeit von Hymer (1977) fußt und das in dem so viel zitierten „eklektischen“ Ansatz von J. Dunning seine Spuren hinterlassen hat. „Ownership Advantages“ sind diesem Paradigma zufolge wesentlich in den Industriestrukturen angelegt, die das Firmenverhalten (hier: das Internationalisierungsverhalten) und letztlich das Ergebnis prägen. Diese Industriestrukturen müssen sich nun aber schon herauskristallisiert haben, sonst macht die „Structure-Conduct-Performance“-Logik keinen Sinn. Die Fokussierung auf „reife“ Industrien und/oder Unternehmen ist daher durchaus folgerichtig (vgl. Kreps 1989). Umgekehrt ist festzustellen: Die neuere Literatur, die sich mit „emergierenden“ Industrien beschäftigt — zu denken ist hier insbesondere an die evolutionstheoretisch geprägten Arbeiten aus dem Umkreis von R. Nelson (siehe etwa Nelson 1994, 1996; Dosi et al. 1990) — hat in die Theorie des multinationalen Unternehmens bzw. der Direktinvestitionen im Ausland noch keinen Eingang gefunden; insofern ist es auch nicht verwunderlich, dass der gewünschte „Shift“ in Richtung auf eine Mitbetrachtung „junger“ Industrien und/oder Unternehmen noch nicht — oder jedenfalls noch nicht in ausreichendem Maße2 — stattgefunden hat.
