Zusammenfassung

„Kindheit und Jugend in Europa in kulturvergleichender Perspektive“ ist in mehrfacher Hinsicht ein grenzenloses Thema: Es geht um reale und verwissenschaftlichte Kindheiten und Jugenden, und zwar in einem bestimmten geopolitischen und historisch-kulturellen Raum. Wo anfangen? Vielleicht bei ,Europa‘. Was verstehen wir unter diesem Begriff — und wer ist ,wir‘? Für Bewohner zentral- und westeuropäischer Länder hat Europa eine alle anderen möglichen Kontexte überformende politisch-wirtschaftliche Bedeutung: wer heute ,Europa‘ sagt, meint das Projekt eines zu vereinigenden Europas mit allen darin enthaltenen Schwierigkeiten und Risiken. Sowie wir diese politisch-institutionelle Ebene verlassen, versinken wir tief in den besonderen kulturellen Landschaften der einzelnen Länder, die sich seit altersher zu Europa rechnen — ob sie nun bereits zur EU gehören oder (noch) nicht. Eine europäische Kindheit und Jugend im engeren Sinn, mit ähnlichen Lebenslagen und Erfahrungen, gibt es nicht: die Lebenschancen rumänischer Kinder sind mit niederländischen nicht zu vergleichen; der Übergang von der Ausbildung in den Beruf ist für Jugendliche in Polen ein anderer als in Italien. Und versammelte man 20 Kinder und Jugendliche aus 20 verschiedenen europäischen Ländern um einen Tisch, so hätten sie Mühe, eine gemeinsame Sprache zu finden. Ähnlich divergent sind die wissenschaftlichen Traditionen, die sich mit Kindheit und Jugend in Europa beschäftigen: es sind ganz überwiegend nationale Traditionen. Sie sind je nach Land für Kindheitsforschung ebenso wie für Jugendforschung andere.
