Zusammenfassung

„(...) they never dreamed that anything they were going to write for newspapers or magazines would wreak such evil havoc in the literary world“. Das aus diesem Zitat aus der Einleitung zu seiner Anthologie The New Journalism herauslesbare naive Staunen des Brandstifters Tom Wolfe (1973: 3) über das von ihm mitentfachte Feuer wirkt auch heute noch wenig überzeugend bei einer Person, die so gar nicht unserer Vorstellung eines Biedermanns entspricht. Wenn man etwa das Umschlagfoto auf Wolfes jüngster Publikation, der Essaysammlung Hooking Up (2000), betrachtet, so erinnert man sich eher an seine Etikettierung als „Dr. Pop“ (Hentoff 1968), die Beschreibung seines Metiers als „KandyKolored Journalism“ (Grossman 1973) und als „His Job Is to Hide His Opinions“ (Wood 1973). Wenn man zudem erfährt, dass Tom Wolfe in Yale im Fach American Studies promovierte, kann man davon ausgehen, dass ihm die immer wieder beschworene große und historisch weit zurückverfolgbare Affinität zwischen Journalismus und amerikanischer Literatur bekannt ist. Die Person des Autors wird bereits an dieser Stelle ganz bewusst betont, weil drei der vier ausgewählten Autoren sich selbst im Werk und als öffentliche Person ausgiebig inszeniert haben.
