„I have thought of a Finland Pavilion that would make up a coherent cultural demonstration, with the material and spiritual aspects consistently dovetailed to make up a single image. This is not just an ordinary commercial fair. I want to make it clear that a coherent, material/cultural image is more useful than just a loosely organized trade fair. A total image, if it is successful, will be more effective in giving a picture of the country’s high-quality output. Obviously it is more important to convey Finland’s level of expertise and our position among the cultured nations than to display individual samples of merchandise“ (Alvar Aalto 1937, zitiert nach MacKeith/Smeds 1993, 53).
