Zusammenfassung

In den letzten Jahren hat die Diskussion über soziales Kapital, die sich zuvor vor allem auf die USA konzentrierte, in Europa stark an Bedeutung gewonnen. Ausgelöst wurde die kontroverse Debatte durch Robert Putnam (1995a, 1995b, 2000) und seine provokante These von der Erosion des Sozialkapitals in den USA und den daraus resultierenden Folgen für die amerikanische Demokratie. Zwischenzeitlich sind zahlreiche Länderstudien sowie einige international vergleichende Arbeiten entstanden, die Aufschluss darüber geben wollen, ob es sich bei der Entwicklung in den USA um einen weltweiten Trend oder lediglich um eine zusätzliche Variante des „American Exceptionalism“ handelt.1 Zudem wurde der Forschungsansatz auf andere Politikebenen ausgedehnt und beispielsweise auf die amerikanischen Einzelstaaten oder die schweizerischen Kantone2 angewandt. Darüber hinaus sind in den letzten Jahren viele historisch angelegte Arbeiten hinzugekommen. Dadurch hat neben der räumlichen auch die zeitliche Dimension für diese Forschungsrichtung eine Aufwertung erfahren.3
