Abstract

Neonatal apnea refers to a pause in breathing longer than 15–20 s. Neonatal apnea may be caused by a large number of diseases affecting not only the brain, but also other organs. The most common cause of neonatal apnea is prematurity. The sudden onset of apnea, particularly in preterms, suggests an intracranial hemorrhage. Joubert syndrome, a posterior fossa malformation, is a rare cause of neonatal apnea. Head ultrasound is helpful in detecting brain abnormalities that may cause neonatal apnea.
