Fertility/Sexual Function

  • Chapter
Crohn’s Disease

Abstract

Advances in the surgical and medical management of Crohn’s disease (CD) continue to improve clinical control highlighting the need for an increased focus on patient quality of life and functional outcomes. Patients with CD are often diagnosed in their late adolescence or early adulthood when sexual function and fertility are of particular concern. Symptoms and treatment related factors of CD have a significant effect on both physiologic and psychosocial aspects of sexuality and fertility. However, many patients feel uncomfortable addressing these issues with their health care providers. It is therefore imperative that all health care professionals caring for patients with CD understand the impact of the disease on sexual function, sexuality, and fertility and create a supportive environment in which to discuss these issues.
