Abstract
The diploid Dactylis glomerata subspecies sinensis occurring in China has a disjunct distribution from other Dactylis subspecies. Nuclear ITS sequences of 2 confirmed diploid and 10 confirmed tetraploid accessions from China were compared with 17 other diploid subspecies across Asia, Europe, North Africa, and the Canary Islands. The results suggest that the Chinese Dactylis has its closest affinity to European forms of the subspecies ashersoniana rather than to the nearest geographic subspecies himalayensis. The nearest that aschersoniana reaches to China is in the Caucasus mountains, a known glacial refuge, but it remains unclear as to whether the migration is preglacial or a more recent migration via human-mediated transfer along the famous “Silk Road.”
