Hören zu können, ist von allen Sinneswahrnehmungen die wichtigste Voraussetzung für die geistige Entwicklung des Menschen und für ein sozial integrierendes Leben in der Gesellschaft. Rund 14 Millionen Menschen in Deutschland leiden unter mehr oder minder starker Schwerhörigkeit. Ohne Behandlung entstehen bei Kindern Sprachentwicklungsstörungen, bei Erwachsenen droht die soziale Isolation.
