Abstract

In view of its long history, it is not surprising that dipyrone (metamizole) has been used for the relief of pain of a wide variety of different causes. In many countries, especially in Germany, dipyrone or Novalgin® is almost a household name. In common with the other non-acidic, non-opioid analgesic paracetamol, past use often outstripped the clinical documentation of efficacy. However, publications on many randomized, double-blind controlled studies are now available in which dipyrone has been investigated in comparison to paracetamol or Opioids for mild to moderate pain. Some of these studies are reviewed here to demonstrate the variety of painful conditions in which dipyrone has been shown to be effective, and more are available in the literature [1–9].
