Abstract

Hypertension is the leading risk factor in cardiovascular disease and renal disorders resulting in premature illness and death. Essential (primary) hypertension accounts for 80% of all hypertensive cases. The term ‘essential hypertension’ is used to designate a disorder for which no well- defined etiologic process has been elucidated. It is often asymptomatic and manifested only by increased arterial blood pressure.
