Summary
A series of 158 hypertensive patients was treated with propranolol alone or in combination with other drugs for periods up to one year. The study was performed at four medical centers in Sweden (Göteborg, Uppsala, Uddevalla and Borås). The average daily dose was 326 mg daily. In 14 patients the drug was withdrawn because of side-effects. The main indications to initiating treatment with propranolol were:
-
1.
Newly discovered and previously untreated hypertension.
-
2.
Postural hypotension caused by previous therapy.
-
3.
Poor control of blood pressure while on previous therapy.
Statistically strongly significant reductions of systolic and diastolic blood pressure were recorded. About two thirds of the patients showed a diastolic blood pressure of 100 mm Hg or lower. Postural hypotension was not seen during the treatment, nor did mild physical work cause hypotension. Decompensated cardiac failure and obstructive pulmonary disease were regarded as contraindications.
