Abstract
Button batteries account for approximately 2% of all ingested foreign bodies in children with a peak incidence between 6 months and 3 years of age. Given its shape, size and contour, a button battery may be mistaken for a coin. Significant sequelae can result from button battery ingestion (BBI) including reported cases of death. This necessitates that any suspected coin or ingested well-circumscribed radiopaque foreign body be scrutinised on radiographs. Button batteries have a distinctive appearance on anteroposterior (AP) radiographs described as a ‘double ring’, ‘double halo’, or ‘double density’.
