Abstract

A foundational understanding of native knee kinematics, specifically the near ball and socket pivot point between the medial femoral condyle and medial tibial plateau, was critical in the development of the medial pivot-based implant. There are unique advantages to designing such implants that may result in tangible differences in the implanted knee replacement in the patient. Furthermore, the use of patient-specific instrumentation as it pertains to medial pivot implants offers additional benefits in terms of time and resources. In this chapter, we will review several salient key points as it pertain to this topic.
