Abstract

In patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), perioperative management of glycemic control is important. This chapter will review the pathophysiology of hyperglycemia during the perioperative period and goals and management of glycemic control in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative time periods. The special circumstances of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII, or insulin pump), and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol are also reviewed here.
