Abstract

Tympanoplasty is the term that describes reconstructive surgeries in the tympanic cleft. In the inlay approach, the graft is inserted through the tympanic membrane perforation and lies on it. Different types of grafts can be used. Cartilage (tragal or conchal) is gaining popularity more recently for primary cases. It was only in 1998 that the butterfly tympanoplasty, a transcanal inlay technique, that uses cartilage as graft, was first described by Ron Eavey. Curiously, it was in 2001 that the first randomized clinical trial published in the field of surgical techniques of tympanoplasty was published and compared butterfly cartilage inlay tympanoplasty (BICT) with temporal fascia underlay tympanoplasty (TFUT). In conclusion, although the take rate and audiometric results following BCIT or TUFT were similar, the BCIT provides several practical advantages.
