Abstract
Despite its relatively recent widespread recognition, vestibular migraine is one of the most common causes of dizziness and vertigo in the world. It’s far more common than other better known causes of vertigo, such as Meniere’s disease. Study of vestibular migraine has been hampered by a lack of knowledge regarding pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment effectiveness. In addition, inefficient care models, high rates of comorbid anxiety, difficulty with symptom description, lack of biomarkers, and historical misogyny in medicine may have all contributed to underrecognition and undertreatment. However, recent years have seen increased attention from relevant practitioners, including otolaryngologists, neurologists, researchers, audiologists, and physical therapists. While much work needs to be done, progress is being made. In this chapter, we will provide a detailed picture of the current knowledge of vestibular migraine.
