Abstract
Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are integral in the pre-, peri-, and postoperative phases of a head and neck cancer patient’s journey. Evaluation and treatment are centered on communication, swallowing, tracheostomy management, and education, training, and counseling. Depending on the site of the cancer, speech and swallowing functions may be differentially affected. By gathering detailed diagnostic information about the patient’s specific postoperative defect and the type of reconstruction, SLPs can tailor interventions to address individual needs. Overall, this chapter emphasizes the essential role of SLPs in the comprehensive care of head and neck cancer patients. Through their expertise in instrumental diagnostics and therapeutic rehabilitation techniques, SLPs strive to obtain optimal patient outcomes and enhance the quality of life following complex ablative and reconstructive interventions.
