Multidisciplinary Approach to Lung Cancer Care

Abstract

Multidisciplinary lung cancer care is here to stay. It is mandated for accreditation of lung cancer programs in many states. A comprehensive review of the literature reveals a swell of enthusiasm for multidisciplinary care although the data in favor is not beyond reproach. Good-quality data is lacking for the most. Being mandated, a randomized clinical trial to resolve the controversy is not likely to take place on ethical grounds. The critics argue that cost and efficiency of care, mainly on the provider side, as well as significant improvement in outcomes despite low implementation over the last two decades are perennial impediments to wider acceptance. “Multidisciplinary care” is poorly defined and encompasses a wide spectrum of activities. This chapter summarizes these activities within their structural boundaries, economical and other. It lays out a framework for groups entertaining to form, revise, or just simply check how their multidisciplinary lung cancer care should look.
