Abstract

During the past 40 years, feminist researchers and practitioners have criticized urban planning for its androcentrism. Few childcare facilities, inadequate public transport, and little employment opportunities, especially in residential locations further away from city centers, made it impossible for many women to work outside the home. In the meantime, gender roles and related task allocation within families have become less rigid, and the awareness of the socially constructed bounds of the category gender and the acceptance for nonbinary identities is growing. To support gender equality and consider multiple perspectives, gender-sensitive planning has been introduced in many municipalities via guidelines, handbooks, and pilot projects. At the same time, the working world is also changing rapidly due to digitalization, demographic change, and a shortage of skilled labor in many sectors, which makes an update of gender-inclusive planning necessary. This chapter provides an overview of fields of action and concrete urban planning measures for gender inclusiveness that aim to support the reconciliation of paid work and care work. It differentiates between tactical and strategic measures and identifies potential for a planning strategy that improves gender equality and supports the reconciliation of paid work and care work in cities and their peripheries.
