Abstract
Non-invasive ventilation is currently one of the most commonly used support methods in hypoxemic and hypercapnic acute respiratory failure.
Agitation, intolerance, and patient–ventilator asynchrony are factors implicated in NIV failure for which judicious sedation is recommended.
Sedation during NIV should be performed with no/minimal respiratory depression and no/minimal impairment of the upper airway.
