Andrologically Relevant Changes in the External Genitals

Abstract

The andrological examination of the male includes an inspection of the external genitals. A variety of dermatologic changes may be noted. Not all skin changes have clinical relevance, but are nevertheless of importance in consultation because of inquiries from concerned patients. Papillae coronae glandis and heterotopic sebaceous glands are examples of normal variants. Most pigmented moles, angiokeratomas, fibromas, and angiomas do not require therapy.

In addition, inspection of the genital skin also offers the possibility of early diagnosis of malignant neoplasms (e.g., erythroplasia Queyrat), infectious diseases (e.g., condylomata acuminata), or generalized skin diseases (e.g., psoriasis vulgaris).

Since diseases of the external genitalia usually worry the affected patients, they can lead to impairment of sexual life, have serious consequences in the case of malignant changes, or, if infectious, can lead to infection of partners; also, in the context of reproductive medical procedures, andrologists should be familiar with their recognition and therapy.
