Abstract
The support of mental health of prisoners is both necessary and complex within a prison setting. The high prevalence of mental health disorders, substance misuse, self-harm, and suicide amongst prisoners and the impact on reoffending have been acknowledged in chapters “Prison Populations, Culture, Violence, and Drug Misuse” and “Healthcare in Prison”. The first section of this chapter will explore the reception process in prison, which has begun to be explored in chapter “Primary Care in Prison”, and the role of the primary care nurse. However, within this chapter, the focus is on the mental health of prisoners. This section will explore the development of reception screening to include valid and reliable mental health screening tools, and the implementation of mental healthcare professionals within this process. The second section will explore the mental health in-reach services, the guidelines and standards that influence the implementation of these services, and lastly the important role of the mental health nurse in both reception and mental health in-reach services.
