Abstract

Postoperative physical therapy emphasizes rapid recovery protocols that allow safe and effective same-day discharge for total joint arthroplasty. For patients appropriately selected for same-day discharge, the focus of postoperative therapy is on early mobilization and meeting discharge goals in a safe and effective manner. Defined discharge criteria, including safe ambulation, transfers, and the ability to perform simple activities of daily living, need to be met prior to home discharge. The utilization of post-discharge formal physical therapy may not be necessary for most patients who undergo outpatient joint replacement, particularly those undergoing total hip or unicondylar knee arthroplasty. Physical therapy protocols will likely continue to evolve, as a greater proportion of patients are moving towards same-day discharge.
