Arachnoid Cysts

Abstract

Arachnoid cysts (ACs) are benign intracranial findings. Gender and age distribution, as well as configuration and lateralization prevalence, is still not well determined and analyzed. Comprehensive analysis and literature review were retrospectively performed. Accordingly, we estimated and compared the statistical associations between gender distribution, location, lateralization, and patients’ age. General prevalence of ACs among the population presents about 2%, varying from 0.23% to 2.6%. Some autopsy studies demonstrated a lower prevalence of ACs at 0.1% of individuals. Two peaks in prevalence at 1 and 5 years (3.8% and 4.6% of pediatric cases, respectively) have been reported. Males are affected twice more than females (M/F ratio: 2/1). It is more frequently diagnosed in the pediatric population where the prevalence of ACs is 2.6%. Numerous evidence, both empirically and clinically tested, have proven that ACs are nearly twice as more common in males and on the left side, almost 50% in the Sylvian fissure.
