Abstract
Biosurfactants are amphiphilic and surface-active biomolecules produced by living microorganisms that present remarkable characteristics over their chemical and synthetic counterparts. Among these characteristics are biodegradability, biocompatibility, low toxicity, high stability at different conditions (pH, salinity, and temperature), and the ability to improve their performances by synergizing with other molecules. In addition, due to their versatility, biosurfactants can be applied in the pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic, cleaning, petrochemicals, mining, metallurgy, agrochemicals, fertilizers, and beverages industries. As well as their industrial relevance, these biomolecules are considered one the crucial know-how for improving the environmental sustainability of the twenty-first century. In this sense, there is a developing conversation around biosurfactants’ environmental safety since several factors involving their production, distribution, and end-use still need to be considered before confirming their sustainability. Moreover, a lot of research work is going on in the attempt to develop new eco-friendly technologies which use low-cost renewable by-products as substrates, alternative processes for the biotechnological production of biosurfactants, waste reduction, and potential reuse of the treated waste. Thus, all effort to make biosurfactants production more sustainable and more viable for commercial and large-scale applications is extremely necessary. This review describes the key aspects related to innovative processes in biosurfactant production and discusses the potential of biosurfactants as sustainable products.
