Abstract
Design is now an omni-category within the creative industries. It includes architectural services, commercial art services, fashion design, graphic design, interior design, jewelry design, signwriting, textile design, ticket writing, advertising services, computer system design, and exhibition and display design. This list, while unwieldy, does allow us to present case studies of creative entrepreneurs who work in the fields of interior design, graphic design, fashion, and architecture. These sectors have become deeply entangled and are emblematic of the changes that have occurred within the broader creative industries. While these disciplines are rooted in Art, there are divergences which reveal distinct disciplinary identities, priorities, and practices. At the same time, the similarities and differences are explored in a series of case studies, all of whom prioritize and identify with design processes. These case studies reveal that while the tools and techniques of design production have changed over recent decades, they have also enabled the growth of this evolving design sector. All of the businesses and practitioners who constitute these cases have engaged in innovative strategic practices as they work with their clients to develop and deliver creative design briefs.
