Abstract
Obesity has become a worldwide health concern and represents a specific population. We are seeing an increasing number of obese patients coming to our intensive care units with various medical problems; among them are phlebitis due to venous stasis; coronary heart disease resulting from a combination of diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension; nonalcoholic liver disease, steatosis, steatohepatitis, and cirrhosis; idiopathic intracranial hypertension and stroke; and also pulmonary diseases like abnormal respiratory function (reduced residual functional capacity), obstructive sleep apnea, and hypoventilation syndrome. Moreover, these patients represent a challenge for the ICU team, and we always need to prepare for a high-risk difficult airway management, and many of these patients will require mechanical ventilation.
