Probiotics Action Against Biofilms

Antibiofilm Strategies

Abstract

Prevention and treatment of biofilm-related infections are still challenging problems in clinics. However, the recent progress in the understanding of the connection between the immune system and probiotics, which are beneficial live microorganisms, has highlighted their plausible effect on biofilm therapy. The bactericidal effects of probiotics have been reported in different human infections including oral, intestinal, vaginal, wound, and medical device-associated infections. Based on their properties, probiotics administration presents as an appealing option for controlling or preventing the development of biofilms. Further studies are needed for a better understanding of the molecular mechanism, action, and the benefits of probiotics usage. In this chapter, we highlight the impact of probiotics and their products on biofilm formation and eradication.
