Food Security and Safety Volume 2

Abstract

Africa’s ageing population is projected to rise by 216%, with an expected growth rate of 74.4 million in 2020 to 235.1 million in 2050. According to future projections, only Africa will experience a steady increase every 10 years. Yet, their nutrition and food security are not given sufficient attention and priority like other vulnerable groups. Many of them encounter health challenges caused by degrading of body organs’ functionality. Diverse chronic diseases (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, cancer, Alzheimer, osteoporosis, arthritis, cardiovascular diseases) are managed mainly by medications, such diseases can be prevented and managed, with appropriate diets with broad or specific functionality. This review aims to identify various foods and their role in geriatric health. In addition, It reflects on the role good nutrition in the elderly population plays in obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, bone health, oral health, and mental health.
