Abstract
Trauma remains the leading cause of death and permanent disabilities in children. Motor vehicle crashes, pedestrian-related trauma, and bicycle-related injuries account for a high proportion of pediatric trauma deaths. Falls, drowning, and burns are further areas of concern. Although the principles of trauma care are identical for children and adults, the unique anatomy and physiology of the growing child or adolescent needs to be considered to optimally treat the injured pediatric patient. The body of a child is very elastic, and internal injuries without significant external signs can be observed. Children are at special risk for severe injuries due to their close proximity of vital organs, their unfavorable head-to-body ratio, and their lower weight and height. Clinicians must be aware of the characteristics that require specific strategies in assessment and management of injuries in polytraumatized children.
