Abstract

The chapter presents a general social norm for increasing employee diversity in pluralistic societies like the United States (U.S.) and homogeneous societies such as Sweden voluntarily admitting diverse immigrants. The chapter further recognizes specific cases for exceptions. At issue is how best to improve diversity and inclusion in businesses. A company example in a pluralistic society is Amazon. Whether based on moral obligation or civic duty conceptions, the general social norm aims to improve diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI). Moral obligation concerns duties toward individuals. Civic duty concerns implementing social preferences for achieving the common good. Exception cases include ethnicity-based businesses and small local businesses, and multinational enterprises (MNEs) operating across various host countries. Goya is an example of an ethnicity-based company.
