University-Based Entrepreneurship Ecosystems: The Role of the Sustainable Family Business Theory and Entrepreneurship Education

Theorising Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Education

Abstract

This chapter explores how entrepreneurship education (EE) can connect elements of University-Based Entrepreneurship Ecosystems (U-BEEs) with the Sustainable Family Business Theory (SFBT) as a way to interpret the role of family firms in the U-BEEs and vice versa. On the one hand, SFBT is a theoretical framework that describes a dynamic, behaviour-based, and multidimensional family business approach that highlights the resources and interpersonal processes used to achieve the family business's long-term sustainability. On the other hand, U-BEE conceptualisation emphasises the interaction among actors that facilitates the access to resources needed in the creation of new ventures. Furthermore, universities play an important role in promoting entrepreneurship through formal education in entrepreneurship and family business, and by the creation and consolidation of U-BEEs. Consequently, in this chapter, it is suggested that EE naturally connects both systems, family firms, and U-BEEs.
