Cerebral Palsy

Abstract

Therapeutic intervention for a child with cerebral palsy needs to be centered on the needs of both the child and their family. This chapter highlights some key aspects to bear in mind for the careful assessment of the child’s problems, referring to the period from birth to adolescence.

In the first year of the child’s life, the emphasis is given to the importance of the baby-parent relationship, the difficult period experienced in a neonatal intensive care unit or rehabilitation services, and the active participation of the parental couple in the therapeutic program in partnership with the therapists.

The holistic approach of the therapeutic intervention considers the child/family/environment as systems at the center of the rehabilitation program. The observation of the child begins with the careful pursuit of elements related to the postural-kinetic, sensory, perceptive, visual, cognitive, communicative, and relational situations of the child, which lead to precise clinical reasoning and the formulation of a detailed work plan. Of course, all aspects highlighted by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health for Children and Youth (ICF-CY) are taken into consideration, always evaluating the child’s positive potential first.

Some outlines for observation and evaluation of the area of interactive processes, communication, and the area of spontaneous motor skills and functions are suggested both in the newborn, infant, school child, and adolescent. Some measurement scales are indicated, taking into consideration both the age group to which they refer and the specific function that requires evaluation in depth.
