Mobile Simulation for Effective Classroom Management Skill Training for Preservice Teachers

Abstract

Effective classroom management skills are critical for students’ achievement and well-being. Previous studies have shown the benefits and affordances of various virtual teaching simulations as an innovative approach to provide more realistic environments for improving classroom teaching and management skills. Yet, to maximize the effectiveness of simulations in teacher preparation courses, the simulations need to be easily accessible for just-in-time classroom integration, immediate feedback, and performance-based reflection. This chapter presents a case of mobile simulation, Mobile version of Simulation for Teaching Enhancement of Authentic Classroom beHavior Emulator (SimTEACHER Mobile), created to promote preservice teachers’ active engagement in classroom management training based on seven effective training elements. SimTEACHER Mobile consists of three main components: (1) Simulation cards that trigger augmented reality (AR) with classroom management simulation scenarios, (2) interactive virtual student characters that respond to users’ inputs, and (3) performance feedback that visualizes users’ classroom management performance using a graph. Findings of a user perception survey and future research directions are also discussed.
