Abstract

This chapter examines Marie Bonaparte’s contribution to the concept of frigidity. It focuses principally on her first academic text, which was written in 1924 under the pseudonym of Narjani. This text, which introduced the concept of téléclitoridie and suggested several possible surgical interventions for it, was much criticized and even denounced as crazy by several commentators during the 1980s. However, when considered in context, it proves to be both innovative and scientifically rigorous. Moreover, it had been well received at the time, both by the psychoanalytic community and by physiologists and surgeons. This chapter goes on to give an overview of the development of Marie Bonaparte’s thinking on the subject of frigidity after she became a psychoanalyst.
