Abstract

Surgery is the cornerstone of a multidisciplinary approach to treating patients with cancer. Inappropriate surgical procedures or the lack of a multidisciplinary approach can permanently compromise patient care, and affect the sustainability of the health care system.

The role of oncologic surgery exceeds that of an isolated interventional procedure, and has its foundations in a multidisciplinary team, including many other professionals. In this setting, the surgeon will be able to identify the optimal indications, and make the most appropriate decisions.
