Abstract

Hormone therapy can be a key strategy in the treatment of some neoplasms. The rational of this approach is based on the sensitivity of cancer cells due to the presence of specific receptors; for this reason they must be carefully investigated during histological analyses or with specific functional imaging techniques. They can be implied in different settings, i.e., pre- or postmenopause women with breast cancer: in these cases for the choice of the drug, these characteristics of patients must be held in consideration. A very peculiar condition is related to the onset of resistant mechanisms, which can be caused by the downregulation of the receptors. Hormonal therapy is nowadays used in case of breast, prostate, and neuroendocrine tumors with different results and benefits for the patients.
