Abstract

We have seen that the composition of the quasicrystals obtained in the various shock experiments is heretofore unreported. For this reason, it is not straightforward to understand if we are dealing with a stable or metastable quasicrystal at ambient conditions. If we consider the Al–Cu–Fe abundances alone, the new shock-produced i-phases are clearly outside the stability field of the quasicrystalline phase reported in the Al–Cu–Fe ternary system.
