Abstract

In the critical care and emergency setting, recent studies have highlighted the increasingly important diagnostic and therapeutic impact of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). The main advantage of POCUS for pregnant women is reduced radiation exposure. The chapter will discuss the use of echocardiography during pregnancy to diagnose cardiac, pericardial and aortic problems and to assess volume status. In maternal cardiac arrest, POCUS can be used to aid management, to identify reversible causes, and to direct management. The final section will discuss abdominal POCUS assessment of pregnant women with non-pregnancy-related conditions and those with obstetrical complications.

Information is provided regarding the specifics of ultrasound examination that can direct diagnostic or therapeutic management.
