Abstract

Consequent to active history of rifting, multiple plume interactions and a number of continental breakups, besides unusual crust-mantle structure, Indian Stable Continental Region (SCR) experiences moderate-to-large intraplate seismic activity since historical times. Most of the past earthquakes e.g.,1819 Kachchh, 1927 Son-valley, 1967 Koyna, 1970 Broach, 1993 Killari, 1997 Jabalpur and 2001 Bhuj among many others, have occurred over the regions infected by Deccan volcanism. Out of these, 1967 Koyna is considered one of the finest example of Reservoir Triggered Seismic activity. Further, many of these earthquakes like1993 Killari and 2001 Bhuj were deadliest in nature, having killed more than 30,000 people. A large number of geological, geophysical (seismic, gravity, magnetic, heat flow, MT etc) and aftershock studies were undertaken over these seismic zones, which indicate that most of these regions are in state of continuous uplift and erosion, which have brought mafic crust (amphiolitic-granulitic) quite close to surface, in which stresses are getting accumulated.
