Abstract
Globally, infant deaths within the perinatal period are concerning and mainly as a result of prematurity, asphyxia, infection or a congenital anomaly. Parents are often faced with making painful decisions for their babies with an uncertain future, and the nurse and the neonatal team must provide them with the best possible emotional and practical support, whilst offering choices for their care. Planning of care must be in partnership with the parents; however, neonatal nurses report that they often feel ill-equipped to provide this specialist care and support. Therefore, it is imperative that neonatal nurses and their colleagues have access to high quality training and development of a complex skill set by ways of increasing their knowledge and confidence.
