Pancreatic Fluid Collection Drainage

Therapeutic Endoscopic Ultrasound

Abstract

Therapy of pancreatic fluid collections (PFC) has evolved greatly over the past 40 years, partly as a result of increased frequency and quality of imaging studies detecting more previously unidentified collections as well as the evolving endoscopic treatment modalities. In 2012, the Acute Pancreatitis Classification Workgroup revised the Atlanta classification system for acute pancreatitis [1]. With standard classification of pancreatic fluid collections, physicians are better equipped to inform their patients and determine the need and timing for treatment; the importance of which cannot be understated, as intervening in certain cases can cause more harm than benefit. Patients with severe acute pancreatitis alongside those with pancreatic necrosis have a greater incidence of developing clinically relevant PFC compared to those with edematous pancreatitis. The aim of this chapter will be to review the indications for intervention of pancreatic fluid collections and details the most up-to-date endoscopic techniques of treatment.
