Abstract

The perfect sleeve gastrectomy in its current iteration would not be possible without the use of minimally invasive electrosurgical and stapling devices. Electrosurgical devices allow the surgeon to ligate vessels, maintain hemostasis, and dissect tissue planes with relative ease. Stapling devices allow for the tight seal and division of tissues that is critical in the formation of the gastric sleeve. Although most experienced surgeons are familiar with the use of these instruments, their complexity and nuances are numerous, and their inappropriate use can have catastrophic results. This chapter will focus on the questions and controversies that typically surround the use of these devices in performing a safe and successful sleeve gastrectomy.
