Abstract

Desmoids are an important manifestation of familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) because, together with duodenal and periampullary cancer, they are one of the commonest disease-related causes of death in these patients. The problems caused by a desmoid depend on its site; frequent complications are small bowel obstruction or perforation and compression of the ureters. They are difficult to manage, because of variable and unpredictable behaviour and an almost total lack of good evidence, and are rarely encountered by the majority of surgeons and gastroenterologists.
