A Note on How to Approach the Narratives in This Volume

As you pen your own narrative or read those contained in this text, consider what your first impression of these patients might be. What would be your visceral snap judgment of the situation? Next, let go of that first impression, and take a moment to more deeply ponder and unpack what you think of the patient in relation to her/his race, sexual orientation, gender, socioeconomic status, language barriers, or disability.

How is this person different from you? How are you alike? What challenges may she/he be facing because of health disparities? How may these differences impact the way someone trusts you or communicates with you?

Finally, consider other similar cases you’ve encountered previously. Are there any major differences, and/or are there any shared lessons that may help you address the social needs facing the patient in the case narrative?
