Actions of Neuropeptide Y on the Electrophysiological Properties of Nerve Cells

  • Chapter
The Biology of Neuropeptide Y and Related Peptides

Part of the book series: Contemporary Neuroscience ((CNEURO))

Abstract

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a 36 amino acid polypeptide that is found widely distributed throughout the peripheral and central nervous systems (1,2). It is related in structure to the peptide PYY, which has a more limited distribution in the nervous system, but is found in high concentrations in a number of endocrine cells (3). The wide distribution of NPY strongly suggests that it carries out numerous functions in the nervous system, and indeed a very large number of effects of the peptide have been demonstrated following its injection into various regions of the brain (e.g., 4). In the present chapter, we will review knownneurophysiological actions of NPY that may allow us to explain at least some of these actions. We will begin by considering the action of NPY in the periphery and then consider its actions in the central nervous system.
