Shared Decision-Making and the Patient-Provider Relationship

Handbook of Health Decision Science

Abstract

Shared decision making is a collaborative approach where clinicians and patients work together to reach an agreement regarding a preference-sensitive healthcare decision where valid treatment options are accompanied by both risks and benefits. It involves presenting the medical evidence clearly, eliciting patient preferences and values, and addressing potential outcomes to reach an agreement about a health decision. Several innovative applications of shared decision-making are discussed in this chapter. One innovative application in the field of surgery is to practice shared decision making about high-risk surgical procedures and postoperative care. This chapter discusses how shared decision-making could enhance informed consent and patient-centered care for high-risk surgical procedures that carry significant risk of need for intensive, life sustaining, postoperative care.
