Abstract
During childhood and adolescence, processes of normal maturation include development of independence and sexuality. Chronic health conditions during these formative years impact on these development processes. Urological services need to cope with the considerable differences between paediatric and adult populations, including support for those patients with chronic disease as they transition into adulthood. The latter requires careful planning and a multidisciplinary team, ideally in a dedicated ‘transition clinic’ setting, managing the transfer, including the reduced level of parental input for patients reaching adulthood. Congenital conditions are a major component of the workload, though all aspects of urology are relevant to the adolescent population.
