Abstract
The unique ability of somatic plant cells to regenerate intact plants via somatic embryogenesis is an elegant tool to obtain plants with selected characters (e. g. resistance to fungi, improved quality). Besides this, somatic embryos will provide easily accessible material to study developmental processes in plants.
